Second, I've started running a Brown Box OD&D campaign, and the characters are starting to explore Dark Chateau.
We have two of my old, old gaming buddies, (2nd level Hobbit Thief, 2nd Level Human Paladin), my dear wife (2nd Level Cleric of Cuthbert), one of my friend's wife (a casual gamer) (2nd level Human Warrior), their 14 year old son (2nd level Cleric of Cuthbert), and two young men from our Star Wars campaign (2nd level Dwarf Cleric of Cuthbert, 1st level Elf Warrior/MU).
they all started at First Level.
Anyway, they ventured out to the Chateau. They scouted quite carefully, killed the giant weasel in the hawk mews, cleaned out the gazebo and avoided the frogs, and then... took the goblins in the stable by surprise.
They fired first in surprise round. Alas, the dice were not with them. They finally got all the goblins, but lost 3 PCs.
Even as they were dragging off the bodies of their slain comrades, their response was not "That was too tough", or "Not fair! You're too harsh!".
All they could talk about was what resources they needed to acquire to succeed the next time.
