AD&D 1E modifications |
Lead | |

So, given that within reason (ie-still being recognizable) 1E allowed modifications within individual campaigns, what were some modifications that others added to their campaigns? This can be with the rules (such as me giving a Monk a +1 bonus to hit points after first level) or to modules (such as Scott and I incorporating the EEG in the ToEE). I also tried out a "Crit Chart" that was inspired by the ICE "Arms Law" (albeit w-a-a-a-y more simplified) back in the 80's [if I can find it, I'll post it here], and as mentioned before my first DM used an Intelligence-based spell bonus for MU's similar to that for Clerics.

Just a few that come to mind as Im sitting here at work.
When a character reaches zero or lower hit points, instead of being out for a week regardless, the customer is out for 1d8-1 days. If the result is zero, then the adventurer could resume adventuring upon healing, and no spells would be lost. Green slime causes damage equal to a flask of acid per round of contact. Dragons are highly customized. For multi-class or characters with two classes, the character uses the larger HD for the level gained. For example: a 1/1 level fighter/magic-user would use a d10 for hit points. A 4th level fighter/5th level magic-user would have the following HD: 1d10, 1d10, 1d10, 1d10, 1d4. If the character reaches a level in a class with a higher HD than a class he has already reached that level with, the HD is re-rolled with the new HD. The result will always be rounded up to the previous HD result if the new result is lower. Spells with less than a round casting time will never carry over to the next round, regardless of the initiative result + casting time result. It is just at the end of the round. For initiative, I use low result wins. Initiative result is the segment your action begins/occurs on. Except for movement, which will begin on the first segment of the round. Monks get the listed AC for the level, or 10 modified by the Dex score. One or the other; they dont stack. Cavaliers can start with any alignment. Only clerics, druids, and paladins start out knowing an alignment language. Other characters can learn alignment languages, but teachers are hard to find, and you dont forget the old alignment language if you change alignment. Lolth doesnt drive a big goofy mechanical spider. |

Hmmm... I let Cavaliers start at anyalignment also, and I do customize dragons somewhat (tail sweeps come to mind...); but--HEYYYYYY!!!!-- I do give Lolth her mechanical spider. C'mon--a little respect for DCS and the web design he pulled off of a towel pattern (although a final confrontation is in a different site--the "mecharachnid" is in the garage so to speak!

The "Web" is a "dungeon level" of sorts. A demi-plane that can be reached from her plane in the Abyss, but not her plane.

Did you augment NPC's? Like me giving Rufus and Byrne each a powerful magic item? And I doubled deities' HP in their places of power (planar domain)...?

I gave Obmi a dwarven thrower. That's about the only one I can think of.
That's when first encountered. Some of them end up regular fixtures in the campaign, and they evolve as time goes by. Burne played a big part in a campaign I ran some years ago. He adventured with a PCs a few years after they left Hommlet. The results are actually the basis for an adventure I may try to publish some day. Scott |

Scott--I promise you that I shall run a Mythus campaign with your HP someday (barring my untimely demise, which is not on any foreseeable horizon), as this is my favorite system to date. Ummmm--Igave Obmi a "thrower" as well--as per Gord!

Maybe Rob can find some way of printing the MYTHUS "Lost Ziggurat" adventure and you and Dave can be playtesters...

Again with the taunting!
Have you tried converting it to AD&D stats? I'm sure Rob can find some way of publishing it if it's up to par. Sir Leo St. Clair, Lord Mayor of Richmondtown

I haven't 'officially' incorporated it yet, but I have an idea I've been kicking around related to the Greyhawk Castle/Dungeons.
This was in response to some conflicting information on how recently Zagig disappeared, and the age of the ruins. My idea is that Zagig didn't build them; he moved into them. He may have rebuilt the upper works, and expanded the dungeons, but they have been there for years. When the Flan first moved into the area, a leader among them built a stronghold upon the mysterious ruins he discovered there. 1,000 years ago, a Suel wizard decied to move into the ruined and abandoned Flan stronghold (I was thinking of Merging Maur castle and the Greyhawk dungeons, and this may be the angle I use). Later, the first Landgraf of Selintan built his castle there. Most Recently, Zagyg moved into the place. Throughout history, there have been individuals who have built their stronghold on the ruins, drawn by the reputation of the place. Some of them were killed or imprisoned while seeking adventuring in the dungeons. Others succeeded in acquiring so much power in the dungeons that they ascended to the ranks of the divine. Zagig was the most recent, and possibly the greatest to occupy the ruins since their original, and still unknown, builders. Scott |

Hmmmm... interesting concept. Where did your conflicting information come from--the Gar-Bear? This reminds us of our discussion of the age of Iuz. You and I should host a forum at the LGGC with Gary and Rob as panelists on "The Conflicting Dates Of Greyhawk"! Grodog will be there making charts and taking notes!!

I think it was Ernie that first mentioned to me that when Gary first started the campaign, Zagig had just disappeared a few years ago. The published campaign has the ruins being empty for some time. With the new CZ series, it seems to have shifted back to the earlier version where Zagyg may have just recently disappeared from the public eye.
The idea also helps explain encounters I can place in the deepest levels of the dungeon that predate any Zagig timeline. Scott |

It's tough to say about Yggsburgh for sure as CZY has Zagyg rescuing the town from a siege 300 years ago, but DC has him disappearing no more than 50 years ago.

While we're on 1E, I'd like some opinions.
"We loot the bodies." I've heard it many times over the years. How thorough of a search does this assume? I'm sure coins in pouches will be found. What about a phlactery worn on the arm under plate, or a magic belt, or a ring under a gauntlet? How specific do you make your plaers get? Scott |

Re: AD&D 1E modifications

I would call BS on anybody who had a ring or a phylactery under armor.
Just plain nonsense. Gronan

You would allow a phladctery to be worn over plate, and have the magic function properly?

I'm still trying to figure out how you would wear one under plate. I mean unless the cut out a square, or built in a raised cube

Re: AD&D 1E modifications

Is it necessary to assume that all D&D phylacteries look like those associated with Judaism?
It doesnt have to be a big honkin box. Theyre designed for clerics, so armor should be assumed. Lareth from the Moathouse wears plate and a phlactery. Would having it worn outside the armor be the logical choice? Scott |

Re: AD&D 1E modifications

Thats a grey area. It is an armwrapping with writing though...
From the DMG glossary: Quote: The term can be used universally in its original etymological meaning as an amulet or charm or as a reliquary but I think its the Jewish "book on the arm" in D&D. N.B. there was never a mention of the more notable "book on the head" was there? N.B. Liches have been depicted with necklace "phylacteries". In the text of MONSTER MANUAL it states they have phylacteries. And Lakofka's "BLUEPRINT FOR A LICH" (DM #26 Jun 1979) describes using the the spell magic jar for lich creation. The magic jar spell uses a crystal or gem as a material component. The SAGE ADVICE (DM #54 Oct 1981) states that the "larva essence" (also in MM entry) could also be integral to the phylactery suggesting the old meaning of phylactery as reliquary. It also states Lakoka's method is his own. No where does Lakofka mention the phylactery so... One of the folks from D&D "Williams years" did one of their streamline jobs (One of the lich ecology books. Guide to the Lich, I believe it was?) and made us all bite our tails on that one by combining the phylactery with the magic jar spell creation Lakofka suggestion so.... EDIT: Oops I wrote "No where does Lakofka mention the reliquary" I corrected it to read "phylactery". Sorry. |
