Anyone got any stories about Murlynd as a PC?

What class was he, by the way? WoG has him as an Illusionist/Magic-User/Paladin, 12th level in each, but while this may be possible for a quasi-deity, it certainly isn't for a human mortal. Did he start as a Fighter and then switch to a Paladin when Greyhawk came out, or was he a Magic-User, or..? Regards.

Murlynd was played by my friend, and Gary's long-time friend, childhood buddy, and co-owner of TSR, Donald Kaye. Don's initial appears with Gary's on the front of all of the earliest D&D books ( a stylized GK). Unfortunately Don died of a heart attack early on in the corporation's history. Gary "deified" him, so to speak, by making him the quasi-deity, Murlynd, as detailed in the WoG Folio.

Don originally played a magic-user. He was well known for using his boots of levitaton to rise above an ongoing outdoors battle only to become a floating target (Gary and I used to say, "barrage balloon") for missile wielding monsters at ground level. He also wielded a staff of power and owned a small house in the City of Greyhawk.

It's great that you mention him, as my talks about Up on a Soap Box articles with Gronan reminded me of an adventure where he, Tom Champeney, and others, had a run-in with an EHP and his castle occupants where Don once again used his boots to snoop around and got burnt by a Balrog. I'm now detailing that adventure for the Dragon.

What...he didnt get roped in and turned into hamburger by that nice flaming sword?

As for Murlynd...interesting story. Thats kinda sad that the basis for Murlynd had to come from loss. However, in some small way, he lives on...much like how Rob Nystul became "world famous" for his last name becoming the most PC annoying spell in fantasy gaming.

So did Murlynd die in that encounter when he was burnt by the balrog?

Sure seems like there were a lot of balrogs running around in the campaigns of the mid-70's.

Was there any basis in actual play for Murlynd to have the six-shooters? Was there a Boot Hill crossover game or anything like that?

No he survived by fleeing.

Only one in JttCotG, one with Don and one which my brother ran into on a rolled encounter, those that I can remember, and the forst was generated by Arneson.

Don was a great fan of the Western and an avid supporter of the Boot Hill rules. He designed several scenarios for the LGTSA to play the rules in, including one which involved the 'Black Bart' gang. otherwise, this is another remembrance added to the super-characterization he became via EGG.

Our campaign(s) were fun because we wanted to make them fun, some DMs are way too serious and stodgy. It's agame, and fantasy on top of it. Prescriptions for fun, IMO.
