I nominate Baum and his works for a place among these other fantasy authors.

Anyone agree?

For those that know the movie, but might not be aware that he originally wrote a boatload of books in and around OZ - 12 or so and a couple other published posthumously.

Anyway, I read the first 2 books many years ago and have wanted to return to the series.

The Oz books are a fun read. Dover has re-printed some or all of them with the original illustrations.

After looking at the Wizard of Oz art by Denslow, I couldn't resist a re-read . . .

A lawful good sorceress and her familiar move through an astral plane where upon they accidentally kill an evil witch. She takes the witch's stuff - beautiful silver shoes possibly imbued with magic. She is hailed and thanked by another good witch and patron of a county of little people. The sorceress is instructed to follow a road paved with yellow bricks to a City of Emeralds, there to find a powerful wizard. Along the way she meets an straw golem . . .

And so it begins. Great stuff. Pure fun fantasy reading.

And therein she meets brains, heart and courage amidst it all and is guided within the adventure by these. These simple but poignant points can be overlooked at times, just as they can be in, "The Little Prince." That's what makes it a classic of literature, as it thrusts us into the human experience.

"Brains, heart, and courage"? My friend, you have encapsulated all that is missing in much of modern literature (including gaming literature). It is for this reason that I stick primarily to the older stuff. Alas that Baum is no longer around to thank for his efforts.

Well yes. I did read the first 3 "Ender" novels and enjoyed them very much!

Did EGG ever mention the Oz books?

I just finished re-reading the Wiz (through my D&D eyes/mindset and was completely struck by the total originality of the book - 1900) and just loved it. The movie was toned down, I'm sure to appeal to the younger audience (ironic for sure, Judy was old - in the book Dorothy was young, but the themes were more suited for young adults rather than children ~ in the book, the Wiz tells Dorothy to kill the wicked witch of the west vs.the movie, where the Wiz tells Dorothy to bring the broom of the WWotW),

So, to follow my above post about the character classes and the D&D angle - the Wiz is really an illusionist/magician. There are treants, Quadlings (halflings, really), flying monkeys, porcelin golems, lots of gold/gems as rewards, magick, and PEOPLE of COLOR!!! Haha, purple, green, red and the green of Oz.

Hmm, I think I might have to write a thesis on this.

I gotta believe that Tolkien was aware of Baum's world and books.
