I love the comic book; the game looks promising.

I finally played Fourth Edition Thursday night. I must say it wasn't a bad experience. It's not an old school game by any means. I wouldn't DM it myself. But as a player I had fun. I'd play in a campaign. The game system works well. It had rules for everything I did. This is good and bad in my book. I can see how a comprehensive set of rules might limit the DM in certain ways, but it also bring a sort of uniformity so as the players know what to expect from one DM to...

The notion that a module or resource should present a GM with the smallest amount of work possible is anathema to the roots of the fantasy role playing campaign. If a world, or even a module, is worth publishing, it should tear asunder at least some of the norms, or else it defies the identify of fantastic, rather collapsing upon itself in its normality.

4E PHB, Ch. 1, pg. 7:

"Throughout the 1980s the game experienced remarkable growth. Novels, cartoon series, computer games and the first campaign settings, Forgotten Realms and the Dragonlance, were released...."

I mean, what value is there in making the claim that either Greyhawk wasn't a campaign setting, it wasn't yet released, or it was released, but not as a "setting?" They're in one of those 3 bins, which denies the game its heritage,...

While this an alt to the 3.5 OGL, Paizo's Pathfinder PHB has received over 10,000 downloads for playtesting. I browsed through it and I'm wondering if anyone else has looked at it. I'm curious what others think about it. Keep in mind, even 1st edition style games are often translated into 3+. I'm not asking after the rules, but content and layout, etc.

I'm thinking the illustrations do it a disservice. And it's hard for me to read the content without the look...

I have been looking over this book since it came in the mail the other day and I am developing much affection for it. As I read it, though, I wonder something.

This book is really where what I knew as D&D seems to come into being. It was almost as if the stuff in the boxed set, in addition to space limitations, was written the way it was to placate certain people who may not have liked some of the ideas that were to come, and then when they were distracted, this book was put out....

Dwarves, Elves and Detection

I was just pondering the races of D&D.

Dwarves don't know a thing about secret doors (directly. They can detect construction) and elves have no forest detection of any kind like the dwarves do for the underground construction. Wouldn't elves be able to detect new growth and/or changes to woods? I would think dwarves are masters of secret doors and elves are automatically ranger-like in the woods. Wasn't the ranger a man who lived among elves in Tolkien?

Excerpt from page 19:

"FALLING (EXPANDED RULES)
The damage sustained by a falling character is 1d6 for the first
10 feet fallen, 2d6 for the second 10 feet, 3d6 for the third 10 feet, and so on. A 30-foot fall, for example, inflicts a total of 6d6 points of damage to a character."

I guess these really are expanded falling rules since 6d6 is a really big expansion on the previously stated 3d6 for 30 feet!

This is what has always made me tongue in cheek...
