On the Relationship between D3 and Q1

I, like many others, have found the relationship between D3 and Q1 problematic. If the Eilservs are behind the giant uprising and they are also worshippers of the Elemental God, why is it that Q1 is a fight against Lolth and not (e.g.) The Elemental God? What's the beef the adventurers are supposed to have with the Demon Queen of Spiders?

There are several possible solutions to this conundrum, the main one (the one I always used as a young DM) being: "Who cares?...

Grodog pointed me this way, and I'm hoping that you (or anyone else around here) might be able to answer a question for me (since I didn't start playing till 3e and a lot of early stuff is totally out of my range of knowledge).

I was wondering if you might know what sources might have inspired the 'Well of Many Worlds' that (as far as I can tell) first appeared in the 1e DMG? The question kinda relates to a project I'm working on, and I'd love to have a...

Tomb of Horrors

So . . . I've been running my daughters through the Tomb of Horrors (does that qualify as child abuse?) and, while they were generally doing very well, they ran into some trouble in the trembling room. Unlike any other group I'd run through there before, they actually grabbed on to the curtains to steady themselves when the floor started to shake -- not a TPK, but close. My elder daughter knows a bit about you and Robilar's past and was wondering if you recalled how Robilar did...

power of charms: AD&D vs. OD&D?

How did you handle charms in El Raja Key and Castle Greyhawk? The DMG speaks to monster charms (harpy, vampire, etc.) being much more powerful than charms from PC casters, but Gary was able to charm Bigby into being his permanent henchmen, and eventually used him as a PC. It sounds like charm person was pretty powerful too, so I'm curious to hear your thoughts, when you're able

Egyptian-style adventuring

Rob, if you have the time, just a quick question that occurred to me while I was reading:

Given that EGG wrote several novels and other products regarding Egypt and Egyptian-style adventuring, it seems fair to think he had something of an interest in that setting. Did Robilar or anyone else that you know of ever journey to Egypt? If so, what happened there?

Just curious.

I finally played Fourth Edition Thursday night. I must say it wasn't a bad experience. It's not an old school game by any means. I wouldn't DM it myself. But as a player I had fun. I'd play in a campaign. The game system works well. It had rules for everything I did. This is good and bad in my book. I can see how a comprehensive set of rules might limit the DM in certain ways, but it also bring a sort of uniformity so as the players know what to expect from one DM to...
